Essentially, it’s a way for your phone to interact with something nearby. It operates within approximately 4 cm and provides a wireless connection between your device and another. This allows for two-way communication, with both devices involved being able to send and receive information.
NFC transmits or receives data via radio waves. It’s an established standard of wireless communication. This means there can be a passive device, such as an Old Stone Tag, requiring no power source to transmit data when an active device, like your smartphone, comes into contact with it.
NFC is the acronym for Near-Field Communication. Invented in 2002, it was designed to transmit short strings of information to an NFC-enabled device, typically a smartphone.
QR is the acronym for Quick Response. QR Codes were invented in 1994 as a “better barcode” because they could be scanned at high speed from any angle with a phone.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both. From Old Stone Tag’s perspective, the most valuable advantages of NFC over a QR Code are the security level and exclusive content. NFC tags include a secure element that prevents duplication.
Your Old Stone Tag will be “locked” to ensure the integrity of the information you provide. The tag cannot be duplicated, and the URL assigned (where the information you provide is stored) cannot be changed. This also ensures any changes you make to the information you provide associated with the tag cannot be redirected, and erroneous information cannot be added.
Old Stone Tags have an NFC inlay embedded within the tag. Since they are not considered disposable and are not discarded after purchase, they are a highly effective way to create engaging experiences throughout the customer journey.
If you have an iPhone 7 or newer with iOS 14 or newer or an Apple Watch, your device is NFC capable, and you can read tags natively with the built-in reader. For phones operating on iOS 13 or earlier, you will need to download the NFC App from the App Store. Unfortunately, NFC is not yet supported by any models of iPad or on any iPhone older than the iPhone 7.
To confirm if your Android device is NFC capable, Open Settings > Select Connected Devices > Tap on Connection Preferences. If you see NFC options, your device is NFC capable. If your device is not NFC capable, download the NFC App from Google Play.
In most cases, if decorations are permitted, your Old Stone Tag will be permitted. However, if you have concerns about whether a tag is permitted, you should check with the cemetery.

An account will be created upon purchase. You will receive an email to set a new password, and then you can log in to the Customer Portal to begin adding information. You are free to update, change, add, and delete any photos, video clips, and any other information associated with the tag 24/7.
You can have as many tags on a stone as your cemetery permits. However, we recommend a single tag with the spouse option for two individuals sharing a stone, or one for each, if that is preferred.
Once you have completed your purchase, you will be redirected to a “Thank You” page. Here you will be directed to return to the Customer Login and add the information you want to be associated with the tag. If you purchased the tag as a gift, you will receive instructions with your tag to provide the recipient so they can get registered and begin adding information to the tag.
You, the customer, or your designee would install the tag on the stone. Your tag will come with complete and easy application instructions. For additional information, watch our instructional video on applying and reading the tag.
Please watch the 3M™ instructional video for how best to remove the tag.

You can apply the tag anywhere permitted. For optimal application, you should select a flat, smooth area where the tag can easily be seen and scanned with your phone or tablet.
Currently, the only place to get your Old Stone Tag is at www.oldstonetag.com. Old Stone Tag plans to partner with funeral homes, monument suppliers, burial insurance, and preplanning
companies in the future with our B2B Portal. If you are interested in partnering with Old Stone Tag, please reach out to admin@oldstonetag.com. We would love to hear from you.
The information you upload is not physically stored on the tag; therefore, there is no “limit” to the amount of information the tag can store. Once purchased, your Old Stone Tag is “written” with a link to where the information is stored. This is how you can update the information on the tag from your computer 24/7. Before the tag is shipped, it is locked for security to ensure no one can make changes to the link, and it is always directed to the correct location of your information. Currently, we allow an obituary, 30 photos, and 3 video clips (per person, per tag).
The customer will be able to provide two legacy account holders for access to the account after they pass. Ownership of the account can be transferred at any time by contacting admin@oldstonetag.com.
